Families can often have surprising, complicated dynamics. Often siblings struggle to get along. However, conflict stemming from these struggles rarely results in violence. Despite this, a teenager in Dekalb now faces criminal charges following the death of his brother.

The incident that ultimately led to a murder charge is said to have happened one evening in December. According to reports, police officers claimed they found the lifeless body of a 17-year-old on the steps of his home. Police believe that he was shot by his 18-year-old brother as a result of a dispute. The details of that dispute are unclear.

Reports indicate that a video posted on social media prior to the shooting showed the older brother with a gun. Police also say that he threatened his brother in the days leading up to the alleged shooting. A younger sister was home at the time of the incident, and the parents arrived home soon after.

Anyone who has a sibling has likely been involved in an argument with them. Even if harsh words are spoken, it might be difficult to accept a threat made during a heated moment with a brother as credible. Unfortunately, a young Dekalb man is now left to deal with the death of his brother while also responding to criminal charges filed against him as a result. Regardless of the reports provided by the news media, those suspected of a crime are presumed innocent unless and until proved otherwise. In order for there to be a conviction, prosecutors must be able to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt — a standard that is often difficult to meet.
